The English playwright Watt Phillips, described Dumas as "the most generous, large-hearted being in the world. He also was the most delightfully amusing and egotistical creature on the face of the earth. His tongue was like a windmill – once set in motion, you never knew when he would stop, especially if the theme was himself."
24 July 1802 – 5 December 1870
  • His father was born in Haiti, to a Frenchmen and an African slave. 
  • His father returned to France at 14 and joined the military, which gave the family rank. 
  • His father served at a high rank in the French Revolutionary Wars and was the first man of color to achieve the rank of general-in-chief. 
  • His father was a POW in the Kingdom of Naples for two years, which ruined his health. 
  • His father died when he was four, leaving behind a mother who could barely take care of her children. 
  • Dumas read everything he could and taught himself Spanish. 
  • In 1822, when the monarchy was restored, Dumas was able to move to Paris. 
  • He wrote articles and plays in the office of Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orléans.
  • In 1830, Dumas participated in the revolution that made the Duke of Orleans the Citizen King.

  • Dumas switched from plays to novels. 
  • Later in life, he took to travel writing. 
  • He made a lot of money from his novels, but lived lavishly. 
  • Historians believe that he had over forty mistresses. 
  • He fathered at least four children. 
  • Napoleon didn't love him. 
  • Dumas fled to the Belgium to escape his debtors.
